West Side Stories Launch At Nexus Cabaret

On Saturday, 30 January, the Nexus Multicultural Arts 2010 Adelaide Fringe Guide – entitled West Side Stories – was launched in a freshly revamped Nexus Cabaret, which underwent beautiful renovations over summer. This showcase event featured highlights and performances from the fabulous West Side Stories program.

First up was an earth-trembling demonstration of Matsuri Taiko’s Festival Drumming, followed by a passionate performance from Yasmine Amber Flamenco, whose sizzling solo dance act CARMEN is one of the highlights of the West Side Stories program. The Bird Wizdom dolls then took to the stage for a riotous sneak peek of their new show, Violet Rapscallion, closely followed by Fusion Arts’ tribal bellydancing from their act Ekata: Music Voice Dance. The West Side Stories showcase concluded with The Damushi Ensemble’s driving African rhythms from its new show Ghana In Groove.

A capacity crowd packed into Nexus Cabaret for the West Side Stories showcase event, with everyone enthusiastically getting into the Fringe spirit!

One for Horror / Sci Fi Fans!

Zombies, aliens and other creatures of the night will take up residence at Nexus Gallery during the 2010 Adelaide Fringe, when Nexus Multicultural Arts presents a new group exhibition It came from outer space…, exploring the darker side of storytelling and our cultural fascination with classic 1950s horror and science fiction iconography.

The Opening Night of the exhibition on 11 February (6pm – 8pm) was a fabulous, fun-filled evening in keeping with the spirit of the exhibition, with guests invited to come dressed as their favourite science fiction / horror characters! There was a door prize for the best-dressed ghoul on the night, which was presented by our special guest speaker, John McConchie (Course Coordinator and Lecturer in the Department of Screen & Media at Flinders University).

It came from outer space… can be seen at Nexus Gallery throughout the 2010 Adelaide Fringe, with the exhibition running from 11 February until 19 March.

Welcome to West Side Stories, the wonderfully diverse program being presented by Nexus Multicultural Arts during the 2010 Adelaide Fringe, from 11 February – 14 March 2010. Tickets to any of the West Side Stories events can be purchased online now from FringeTix.

Stories form the essence of human learning and entertainment. At Nexus, we pride ourselves on sharing the stories that are overlooked by other arts organisations. Nexus is a dynamic arts and social networking centre uniting creativity and cultural diversity – a place where artists, communities and audiences share experiences, create artworks and tell their stories.

Our 2010 Fringe program is brimming with amazing experiences and stories – from Damushi Ensemble’s African rhythms in the new show “Ghana In Groove” and tribal bellydancing from Fusion Arts in “Ekata: Music Voice Dance”, to Adelaide Russian Theatre’s tribute to a Russian literary great with the play “From Chekhov with Love” as well as Matura Taiko’s earth-trembling “Festival Drumming”.
